PROOF, a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-funded interdisciplinary research program studying policy interventions to household food insecurity in Canada, invites applications for two (2) post-doctoral fellowships.
Successful candidates will join a team of accomplished researchers and examine economic predictors of food insecurity in Canada and changes in households’ vulnerability to food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, working with large microdata files accessed through the Statistics Canada Research Data Centres under the supervision of PROOF principal investigator, Dr. Valerie Tarasuk.
The ideal candidates will have a strong interest in household food insecurity, social policy, and the social determinants of health, and the experience and expertise to take advantage of the opportunity to access novel and rich data on food insecurity, financial circumstances, and labour market activity to build a highly productive applied research portfolio.
PROOF’s research has elucidated the socio-demographics of food insecurity in Canada, uncovered the health care costs associated with food insecurity, expanded the understanding of the relationship between food insecurity and health, and explored the impact of federal and provincial policies, through innovative analyses of survey and linked-administrative health data.
The research conducted through these fellowships will advance the understanding of food insecurity in Canada, particularly in light of pandemic-related changes to household economic circumstances, and provide evidence to inform the development of effective policy interventions.
Term:
These full-time temporary positions are for one (1) year, with the possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance evaluations. The positions can commence as soon as possible.
Salary:
Competitive salary equalling or exceeding CIHR fellowship stipends, plus benefits. Actual salary will depend on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and progress.
Minimum qualifications:
- PhD, ScD, DrPH, or an equivalent doctoral degree in epidemiology, economics, biostatistics, public health, or related fields, completed within the last 5 years
- Experience conducting statistical analyses with large databases
Preferred qualifications:
- Strong track record of research productivity
- Experience conducting quantitative research designed to inform public policy
- Knowledge of household food insecurity, social determinants of health, poverty, and social policy
Duties:
- Plan, develop, and conduct quantitative studies, applying economic, social or health frameworks and statistical techniques to the analysis of population survey data at the Statistics Canada Research Data Centre in Toronto
- Lead and co-author manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals
- Actively participate in knowledge translation activities
- Critically contribute to the team efforts in ongoing research
